When life deals you lemons ...

... Get a tattoo!!

Life has dealt me lemons this week.  After some lovely highs ... passing my driving test, some new work opportunities, my husband home from yet another lengthy business trip, a gorgeous family wedding ... I was feeling very positive, passionate and optimistic about my future and a new chapter in life coinciding with the excitement of my 30th next month ... then it all came crashing down.

So what do we do in a situation like that?  Well, I always find a change is quite good - like a new haircut that makes over your physical appearance but gives you an inner boost of confidence that is often needed in times of low energy.

I am considering something a little more drastic (for me, anyway) ... a tattoo.  Something permanent, something that will remain with me and remind me of where I've been and how I can (hopefully) overcome anything.

Tattoo wise - I like birds, feathers and especially love the 'trend' for handwritten tattoos

I've no idea where I would get my tattoo (can anyone recommend the least painful areas of the body please? I am a woose!) and still to decide what I should go for.

I may even visit some tattoo shops this weekend for some extra inspiration and encouragement.

What is your tattoo inspiration?

  1. I love the pic's. I have 2, one on my back and one on my side, i've blogged about my side one, you should check it out.

The only advice I would give, and I say it to everyone that mentions getting a tattoo, is be sure about what you want and where you get it, and research!

I spent 2 years looking at thousands of pic's and asked mate's about where they went for their's.

I don't think there is a best place to put it regarding pain, it's all about how you handle pain. My side one was sore.

    HTH's =) xx

  2. Sorry things have taken a turn for the worse :-(
I'm covered in tattoos - lots of feathers and birds!
I second what Redz above says - make sure you know exactly what you want and where you want it before you take the plunge. Feet, ribs, waist are by far the most painful - but never too painful. Inside of your forearm is a breeze - especially if you're just going for something as simple as script. It's more about the length of time you take per sitting. My advice is NEVER sit for over 3 hours. After that your skin just comes alive and it's horrible. No good tattooist would put you through that unless you are determined to get it done all at once. But there's no rush - it's gonna be with you for the rest of your life.
I highly recommend Steven Wrigley or Irezumi on Dowanhill Street, Glasgow x

  3. I have a pair of wolf paws with branch and leaf silhouettes going through them, on my chest :D I definitely intend on getting more tattoos in the future.

Some of the worst places are ribs, your spine, hips (like on the bone), and around your elbow area, especially on the inside. Usually it's the areas where the bone is close to the surface and your skin is thin.

I thought that a chest piercing would hurt but surprisingly it didn't. In fact the only time it prickled was when it got slightly close to my collar bone. Pain is different for everyone so you may find it hurts more or less than other people. It also feels different for everyone. I found that it felt like being prodded in the same place repeatedly, which was more annoying than painful :P

I've written quite a lot, oops! Hopefully this helps! :)

  4. I'd love something like this as a tattoo:

But I've vowed no more tatts as I don't like any of the ones I've got!

  6. I hope things get better soon!

How weird is it that we both have the urge to get a tattoo at the moment and posted about it on the same day :) I have two already on my spine and ankle and hoping to get more... many more!

I would say that my spinal tattoo hurt a lot more then my ankle and i am a wuss also, but the pain is bearable! I look forward to seeng what you have done x

  7. Sorry, but if you can't handle pain you shouldn't get a tattoo, it's going to hurt no matter where you get it. Pain shouldn't be a deciding factor in choosing to get one. It hurts like a bitch but yes, it is worth it.

I sincerely hope you don't get an impulse tattoo that you'll regret in the future. Generally the best idea is to wait six months to a year after deciding on a design, as at least you know you won't decide you hate it after a few weeks. Still, it's your decision if you want a piece of unoriginal flash or something, as opposed to something meaningful to you.

Make sure you go to a good shop, and look through their portfolio before you commit! There's nothing worse than a terrible tattoo.

  8. If you do decide to get one I can recommend a really good place and show you photos of mines if you like. Mines are all writing so might be some inspiration..

As for least painful - a small tattoo won't hurt too much where-ever it is - I've got tattoos in the most 'traditional' painful places and they weren't that bad. Over my ribs was one of the worst though, I'd avoid that!

Anyway, give me a shout if you want to know any more :)

  9. wow lots of good advice there, thanks for all your comments

@Emily Thanks for your advice, i don't plan on getting a piece of unoriginal flash - if you had read the blogpost you may have guessed that. I don't like pain but i am not a numbnut I know it will hurt, why else would i get one?!

  10. Definitely a good idea.

I'm getting my first tattoo on Tuesday. I took my ideas, and drafts to the tattoo artist and they drew it up for me.

I think it's a great idea to get a tattoo, very creative, but only if it has meaning to you. Something original, you don't want to walk down the street and see they have the exact same tattoo as you?

So I'd say even if you get a handwritten tattoo (which I also love!) I think you should incorporate something into it that relates to you, not just the word. For example the writing turning into your favourite flower, or some other picture at the end etc.

Keep us posted on how it goes...good luck!

  11. aww sorry to hear about the lemons but as for tattoos i have 3 - nape of neck, back, leg and the neck hurt the most - by far i could feel the vibration in my brain! it is only very small and was a result of life throwing lemons at me also! i love it though.

i am planning a new one for my son in very fine ink latin writing running down my spine 'meus fillius meus vita' (my boy my life - need to recheck the translation on that though)

    good luck! i love tats!

  13. I've thought about getting a tattoo for ages and during a particularly difficult period I was more keen to get one. I knew it was a big decision and I had to be completely sure etc etc and I felt I was sure I wanted one. I considered words and fonts and designs and in the end I didn't do it and I'm REALLY glad. It was a horrible time and I get so sad thinking about how I felt then that I'm glad I don't have a permenant physical reminder on me that takes me back to that time. I wouldn't rule out getting a tattoo but I would definitely do it at a happy time to mark how I was feeling then. Does that make sense? I'm not sure if that relates to your circumstances but for me I'm so glad I waited and have kept the option open.

  14. Hey love! I have one tattoo so far (a ladybird, a slightly odd obsession) but I have 3 more planned. All the ones I want are inspired by things I have always loved and always will love. Soon as you feel up to it, go for it. Not when you are feeling low though as I am sure that will lower your pain threshold...no medical reason behind that statement though but I think it makes sense!!

  15. Bit of a contradiction by someone up there :S Pain shouldnt be a deciding factor, but sometimes it is! And if you cant handle pain, but you want a tattoo, you should still get one! Just think carefully about the location and the amount of time you can sit for. People's fear of pain doesnt automatically level with their actual pain threshold. I think if you went and eased yourself in carefully with your first tattoo (for example, NOT a foot or rib piece and a 4 hour sitting!) then you will surprise yourself at how bearable the pain is.

I have a fair few, as you know. And I would love to get tattooed on my feet, but I am unsure yet how much I want it (if I REALLY wanted it, I would just grin and bare it) But I wouldnt want to put the tattooist in an awkward position, knowing that I wont sit well for him because Id be getting tattooed in an area im not 100% confident (ok, even frightened) about getting tattooed in.

If you ever want a buddy to head over to a place in glasgow with to have a consultation (id reccommend the guys at irezumi) then dont hesitate to email me lass! :) xx

Ps. I just did a tattoo guest post over at Sometimes Sweet. Might help answer some of your questions http://sometimessweet.blogspot.com/2011/03/tattoo-tuesday-v63.html

  16. I've 2 tattoos both on my back, a flower at the bottom and a latin hand written phrase across the top - they both hurt a lot!! The weirdest thing is the high i get afterwards, its definitely worth all the pain! i dont know if a lot of other people get it after having them done..

I was insanely worried about the pain especially at the 2nd one as it was bigger than the flower and i knew what to expect but dont let it put you off, its bareable and you can always ask the artist to take a break! good luck and i hope things pick up for you soon x

  17. Mate, I am the BIGGEST wuss in the world, I'm not even joking. I got my tat last summer on the back of my neck/top of my spine and it was TOTALLY fine. I mean it was a bit uncomfy, but completely bearable!

I knew for ages I wanted a literary tat but hummed and hawed about the quote for years. I eventually settled on a line from Le Petit Prince by Antoine de Saint Exuprey - "Mais les yeux sont aveugles, il faut chercher avec la couer." The eyes are blind one must look with the heart. Figured I'd never NOT agree with that!

I got it done at a particularly turbulent time in my life and don't regret it one bit. In fact, I'm planning on getting a small outline of a pentagon on my upper arm to represent me and my four friends (five sided object - five pals) and can't wait.

I'd say go for it. Life's too short :)

Keep yer chin up. Swings and roundabouts innit, ups n downs. This too will pass.

    xx
ps the word verification for this post is "nedgas" I shitunot. NED GAS. lol!
