Playboy in the UK

Thirty years after the London club was closed, this week Hugh Heffner re-launched his Mayfair club complete with the iconic Playboy Bunnies in tow.

For many a feminist out there it was a day of protest exclaiming that the re-opening the club was degrading to women and glamourised pornography.  Well, I have never claimed to be a feminist ... not a full time one at least ;).

I believe in equality but I also believe in defined roles between male and female but most of all I believe in empowerment of the individual.  I have always had a bit of a thing for Playboy and posted about vintage covers a while back.  It's true to say that if I were around back in the 60's/70's, I would have loved nothing more than to be a Playboy Bunny, following in the footsteps of the incredible Debbie Harry and Lauren Hutton who in my opinion are strong, empowered women.

These days I am a bit past it to be a Bunny and I don't think my husband would take to kindly to it either.  I don't look at it as degrading at all ... for the most part the women are covered up in their bunny costumes and it's all about the element of suggestion rather than walking into a strip bar where girl writhe around naked on poles.

None of the Playboy Bunnies are being forced to dress up and work at the club, they all applied for the job - I don't see that as degrading.  What about an individuals right to be what they want to be and do what they want to do?  Surely a person is free to make their own choices.

I was quite excited to hear about the Playboy club whether that makes me vile, disgusting, ignorant, I really don't know.  My heart still lies in the old retro Playboy era but I think it will be interesting to see how it will translate in the 21st Century.

Lauren Hutton as a Bunny
Apparently Hef isn't looking for uber tanned, overtly sexy women to be his Bunnies, he is sticking to his original brief from when the legacy began, the girl next door who can flutter their lashes and intrigue the customer.

It's just all a bit tongue in cheek and that's what I think the protesters fail to see.

What are your thoughts on Playboy hitting the UK after all these years?

I don't understand the people that protest about it at all, like you said its better than a strip club with the naked girl and pole!!

  2. I guess it's all down to the individual as to what offends them. I don't have anything against the women who want to become bunnies...I personally wouldn't want to but each to their own I say!

  3. Lets be honest - no man has an issue with women who want to be bunnies, it's other women. If women really wanted to be feminists they should stop dragging down other women's choices and branding those choices as "degrading" and start supporting other women - wasn't the point of feminism all about the sisterhood in the first place?

  4. @Jen Yeah too true xx

@Liparazzi you are totally right, it's an individuals choice and I totally get it that others wouldn't agree with it - my parents for starters would be appalled to hear this, it's just all the fuss and kerfuffle that comes with opposite opinions I could do without xx

@Wonderland Girl brilliant point. It is about choice. SUPPORT THE SISTERHOOD ;) xx
